Major Components of the Music Box

Music Boxes come in all shapes and sizes. Not all music boxes have the same hardware. All have combs and teeth that play the main musical movement. Some have drums, bells, and other miniaturized instruments to enhance the sound of the movement.

A cylinder, with hundreds or thousands of pins, or a disc with punched holes, plays the notes by plucking the teeth of the comb.

A spring is wound up by a hand crank or a key. When a switch is turned on, the music box begins to turn the cylinder or the disc and the pins pluck the teeth of the comb, producing the musical notes on the comb.

The governor assembly regulates the music box speed using a set of fan-like blades. There is a garnet on top of the assembly which the worm gear tip touches which allows the gear to start and stop at any spot with no resistance. Sometimes there is an additional knob on top to adjust slow/fast. Other machines have a separate slow/fast lever.

The Musical Wonder House offers a wide-range of music box repair services for both contemporary and vintage music boxes.
